Piko Breeding is the breeding division of phalaenopsis nursery, Piko Plant, renowned for its exclusive and chic Bohemian Orchids®. For more than 30 years, we have devoted our passion and expertise to growing the most exclusive varieties of phalaenopsis for the upper market segment at our modern nursery in Nootdorp (near The Hague).
Our love for this beautiful plant and our pursuit of perfection led to the founding of Piko Breeding. The unique varieties created by Piko Breeding are now appreciated and valued in many countries for their exceptional quality and distinctive features: an extra-large flower size combined with short branches and extravagant colours with, or without the “big-lip” petal variation.
HISTORY
Piko Plant is a true family business with a history dating back more than 50 years at its site at Dwarskade in Nootdorp. In 1957 Piet de Koning (PiKo) started a nursery growing cucumbers and tomatoes. In the early 1970s, the Koning family switched to growing cut flowers, initially gerberas, followed by cymbidiums – an orchid variety suitable for cutting. This fanned the flames to ignite a passion for orchids. In the early 1980s, the first pot of phalaenopsis was cultivated. In 1989, Arno de Koning took over the management of the company from his parents.
The nursery soon reached the stage where growth was necessary and expansion projects were completed in two phases in 1998 and 2004. The last construction project, for the time being, was finished in 2012. This was the most radical redesign and ultimately doubled the surface area of the nursery. The nursery now extends to cover 44,000 m2, including a second cultivation level of 3,500 m2.
WHAT WE CONSIDER IMPORTANT
At our nursery, we apply state-of-the-art techniques and insights. Many of the processes are automated, but every plant is still inspected by the human eye as well as a camera eye. After all, our experienced team have unrivalled knowledge of what is best for our orchids and the ability to select the best plants. That involves pure craftmanship and knowledge. It is no coincidence that these are also among our core values. Our passion and creative power of imagination are other defining qualities of our company. These values form the foundation from which we innovate and develop.
And finally, we are driven by quality. Our commitment to quality has been guaranteed for more than 30 years and is an aspect we are not prepared to compromise. Our extensive tests and strict selection procedures ensure only the best and strongest plants rise to the challenge and are considered good enough to be included in our exclusive collection. This is how we allow consumers worldwide to enjoy our orchids for even longer.
BREEDER AND GROWER: A GOLDEN COMBINATION
Our experience as a grower plays a key role in this respect. Contrary to standard practice we select our varieties at a practical level. This means they are located among the production varieties at the nursery and are exposed to similar growing conditions. The strongest varieties are revealed so we can quickly see which plants have the greatest potential to pass our stringent selection criteria.
CERTIFICATES
Quality is the priority at Piko Plant. To safeguard quality, we have been awarded the following certification: MPS GAP, MPS SQ, ETI and Productproof. Compliance with the standards is audited every year. This offers the assurance that we meet the strictest requirements in terms of quality assurance, traceability, the environment, labour conditions, safety and hygiene.
